FAQ about Coaching and Psychotherapy

Experienced Coach and Psychotherapist

What is the difference between Coaching and Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy provides a safe and consistent space for self-exploration, healing, and emotional processing. Together we can explore deeper emotional patterns, past experiences, and unconscious dynamics that may be influencing your present.

Therapy can help with challenges such as:

  • anxiety and depression

  • trauma and loss

  • relationship difficulties

  • low self-esteem or self-criticism

Sessions are usually held weekly, at the same time and day, to provide a sense of continuity and stability.

Coaching

Coaching is more present- and future-focused, supporting you to identify goals, build confidence, and take meaningful action. It is structured around practical steps to help you grow personally and professionally.

Coaching is particularly helpful for:

  • building confidence and resilience

  • navigating career transitions

  • recognising and developing your  strengths

  • shifting mindset and habits

Sometimes coaching work uncovers deeper blocks or unresolved experiences. If that happens, we can pause and explore these therapeutically, always ensuring the sessions are meeting your needs.

How do I know if I need Coaching or Psychotherapy?

It’s not always easy to know whether therapy or coaching will be most helpful  and you don’t have to have the answer before reaching out. We can explore it together.

  • Psychotherapy may be the best fit if you’re looking for deeper emotional healing and support with past experiences, or if you’re struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or self-esteem.

  • Therapeutic Coaching may be more suitable if you’re seeking personal or professional growth, clarity, and actionable steps, for example in confidence, career, leadership, change or mindset.

Sometimes coaching also touches on emotional blocks or patterns from the past. If that happens, we can use a therapeutic approach within the coaching process to make sure the work continues to benefit you.

Not sure which to choose? Contact me to arrange a complimentary 30-minute consultation, and we can think together about what you need and what feels right.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes I offer a free 30 minute consultation to help you determine whether coaching, psychotherapy or a blend are most suited for you. In this consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss your needs, ask any questions, and get a sense of how we might work together.  The consultation can take place over the phone or via zoom. To book a consultation, please get in touch.

How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions depends on your individual needs and goals.

Psychotherapy is ongoing, short term or long term work depending on your needs. Sessions last 50 minutes and take place weekly.

Coaching is typically structured as a 6 session package over 6 months to allow time for reflection and action.  Sessions last for 90 minutes to facilitate deeper discussion and goal setting.

If we decide on a blend of both, we will discuss a frequency that feels right for you.

Please get in touch if you wish to set up a free consultation to discuss further.

What approaches or techniques do you use in your work?

My approach is relational, depth focused, and tailored to your needs drawing from both psychotherapy and coaching to support meaningful change.

With psychotherapy I use the following approach:

  • Relational Psychotherapy: This focuses on how past and present relationships shape your emotional world, offering attuned, healing interactions.

  • Psychodynamic Therapy: This explores the unconscious patterns, childhood experiences, and the deep roots of thoughts and behaviour.

  • Attachment Based Therapy: Examines how early relationships influence your sense of security and self worth.

  • Integrative Therapy: Adapts different therapeutic models to meet you where you are.

  • Mind Body Awareness: Helps connect emotional experiences to physical sensations, recognising how trauma or stress manifests in the body.

For coaching I use:

  • Deep Enquiry and Reflection: This encourages self awareness, helping you to uncover blind spots and limiting beliefs.

  • Transactional Analysis (adult, child, parent model): Supports understanding and shifting internal dialogue to develop a stronger adult self.

  • Goal Orientated Coaching: Focuses on clear, achievable steps to move forward with purpose.

  • Accountability and Action Planning: Helps maintain momentum and create lasting change

  • Mindset shifts and confidence building: Supports self belief and resilience in both personal and professional life.

To discuss more about the best approach for you, please contact me to arrange a complimentary introduction call.

Do you offer concessions or discounts for block bookings?

I offer a limited number of concession places for those that may need financial support.  These are allocated on a case by case basis, depending on availability.

For coaching I provide discounts for block bookings.  Six 90 minute sessions over 6 months.  This can be discussed when booking. For psychotherapy, sessions are typically on going and charged per session.

If you have any queries on the fees, please get in touch.
